Quail Run School

By Dave Toplikar

Many of the older schools in Lawrence were named after people.

But when Quail Run School was constructed in 1988, the school board decided to go in a different direction -- naming the school after the surrounding housing development in western Lawrence.

At the time it was built, the school, at 1130 Inverness Dr., was surrounded by a wooded area in the new development. And faculty members who arrived early often saw deer and other wildlife on the grounds.

Enrollment and socioeconomic mix

In November 2004, the school remained one of the largest elementary schools in the city, with an enrollment of 360 students.

According to the Kansas State Board of Education Report Card, 8.16 percent of the students are economically disadvantaged.

Here is the building's ethnicity breakdown: white, 85.2 percent; African American, 5.61 percent; Hispanic, 1.79 percent; other, 7.4 percent.

Reading and math

According to the state's latest report card for Quail Run School, fifth-grade students showed a decrease in reading scores and fourth-graders increased their math scores over the previous year.

Quail Run School students scored higher than their peers in the district and across the state in reading and in math, getting a "Standard of Excellence" rating in both math and reading from the state.

The number of the school's fifth-graders who were "proficient," "advanced," or "exemplary" in reading went from 88.7 percent to 88.6 percent on the state test.

The Lawrence district's overall reading score for fifth-graders showed that 74.8 percent were either proficent, advanced or exemplary in reading. The overall state score was 72.1 percent for those categories.

Quail Run School's fourth-graders tested in math showed an increase from 95.0 percent to 96.4 percent between 2003 and 2004 for students scoring either proficient, advanced or exemplary.

That compared with 81.0 percent for the entire district and 80.3 percent for the state.

Hours and staff

The school's regular hours are 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

The school has an after-school program with Stepping Stones, 843-5919. The after-school program's hours are 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The school's staff includes a total of 59 teachers and support staff. Brenda Meyers, a second-grade teacher, was named as the district's 2003 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Jane Boberg, who retired in 2003, was named a master teacher in 2000. Jane Imber was named a master teacher in 1995.

Quail Run School's principal, Paulette Strong, has been at the school since 2000. She was formerly principal of Grant (now closed) and Woodlawn elementary schools in Lawrence.
